IFTA - International Fuel Tax Agreement
The International fuel tax (IFTA) agreement is initiated by and among lower 48 states and Canadian provinces to simplify the fuel reporting procedure. The tax agreement allows truckers to pay their fuel taxes efficiently by calculating miles traveled in each member jurisdiction.
IFTA License & Decals
Submit a completed permit application (CT‑IFTA‑2) to the Department of Revenue Services to get the International Fuel Tax Agreement License. After the approval, the state will issue a set of decals and a license for motor carrier vehicle. Secure a photocopy of the license while operating the vehicle interstate and keep the original at the business place. The license is valid for the calendar year (i.e., from January to December).
IFTA Fees
Connecticut IFTA license and decals require a payment of $10.
Should I register for IFTA in my state?
The motor vehicles that qualify for the IFTA must possess a gross weight exceeding 26,000 lbs. These vehicles are widely used for moving materials and goods interstate and are designed with the configuration as given below,
- Two axles along with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 lbs; or
- With three or more axles (without considering the weight); or
- A weight exceeding 26,000 lbs when used in combination.
Recreational vehicles don’t take part in the IFTA program unless they are used for any business endeavor.

What credentials will I receive?
After the approval, the state will issue a license and two decals to each motor carriers for the IFTA licensee. The trucker must carry a photocopy of the license in the vehicle while traveling interstate and must secure the original at the business address. The IFTA license will be valid for the whole calendar year.

Due Dates:
The DUE DATE for the quarterly tax return for each quarter is given below. Usually, the due date falls on the last day of the month, and if at any case it falls on a weekend or State holiday, the due date is the next business day.

Do I file a quarterly fuel tax report if I didn't run during the quarter?
All qualifying vehicle whether it is used or not during the quarter must file IFTA. If you have not operated the vehicle in a particular quarter, you must submit a “zero” report.
How do I obtain a return?
The IFTA quarterly tax report must be filed online or else you can simply download and submit the application to the state in person. A quarterly tax report must be filed whatsoever, i.e., even if your vehicles haven’t consumed any fuel in a particular quarter.

Renewals
The state will mail out the renewal date before two months, and you must renew the vehicle license before the due date. You can renew by mail, in person or online.
